Challenge:

An OEM customer's new roof assembly consists of multiple layers of workpieces (Duplex - Cast Aluminum - Duplex) in different shapes, with structural adhesive applied between the layers of workpieces. The old process used by the customer was SPR riveting, which was prone to cracking of the cast aluminum workpieces at the joints; the workpieces needed to be pre-opened, and it was difficult to align the holes in the multi-layer panels, which made the joining process costly, inefficient, and unable to achieve a reliable connection.

Solution:

In order to solve this problem, we use FSPR technology, which can effectively achieve riveting of two or more layers of materials such as steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, high-strength steel, and aluminum alloy carbon fiber. We use a servo cylinder (8 tons) as an actuator, which is capable of outputting large tonnage riveting force as well as precise control of the riveting process. We use a newly developed Rivet Monitor (HRC670) for real-time monitoring and storage of force and displacement curves for back-checking.

Impact:
● Solve the industry's technical dilemma that thermoformed steel and cast aluminum can not be effectively connected to achieve a variety of difficult to weld the reliable connection between the materials.
● Realize the light weight of automobile body and reduce the consumption of chemical energy in the process of automobile use.
